Can I raise a practical question?

How does this work?

Kinja'd!!!

(Taken by me at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show)

I see five projectors. Are the inner two low beams, all five come on for highs? Are there two low, two high, and projector running lights ? Do #2 and #4 come on for lows, 1, 3, and 5 for highs? Are the outermost used as a turn signal? Are there the same style plug going to each to let you customize which come on when?

If nothing else, we may have a contender for the most expensive headlight to replace after you clip a deer.

I’m guessing there are 5 led’s, low and high beam probably lights all of them dimmer or brighter and the turn signal is on the end after the led accent strip.

Led should not burn out very often and I doubt it’s more expensive to replace than an hid unit.

On the contrary.

The problem arises when the led does burn out. When the mdx was new in 2014, the replacement cost was over $1,000 including labor. This is because when the bulb goes out, the entire headlight assembly would have to be replaced by the dealer.

Say you wanted rlx instead. That’ll be close to $2,500. For one headlight assembly. Ouch.

It may be a bit cheaper now, as does happen when the new wears off of the technology used, but it is still hard to swallow having to replace an entire headlight because of one bulb.

On the Acura mdx, the outer 3 were for low and the inner 2 were for high. I can only assume the same may be true for this car. And yes, it will be quite expensive to replace if you have to do the same for this car as you do the Acuras that have the jewel eyes.

My dad had an LED bar burn out in the tail light of his BMW. $300.

I think it is practical. one goes out your still 70% effective and the cops won’t pull you over.

It’s all a matter of angle, really. Your low-beams are angled towards the road, to reflect against the lane dividers and other reflectors. High-beams are angled directly ahead, to reflect against distant road signs and trees much better than your low-beams can. I know on Volvos, there are motors that control the angle of the headlights, so that could be the case with these.

Isn’t that the trick with design-y household lamps these days? Instead of replacing the bulb/diode, you just get a new lamp. Maybe that’s what Lincoln and Acura meant to suggest.

It’s making simple things like replacing a bulb less user friendly, that’s for sure.

I'm guessing they kinda work like bi-xenons, but as leds, being able to select how powerful (bright) each led is at each given moment. the turn signal would be that DRL strip, which would change color when signaling, kind of like audis, actually, exactly like audis.

Oh, I know the mechanics of different headlights, I’m just wondering how they’re utilizing 5 lenses - whether they are fixed and switch on and off for high/low or if they all tilt/have a cutoff.
